Adding a New Geolocation Filter
The process of adding a new Geolocation filter consists of defining defining one or more conditions that that will be used when the filter is applied.
- In a Geolocation filter, all conditions are based on the location in which the recipient was detected to be when he/she opened an email message
- You can connect multiple conditions using the Boolean operators OR. The operator AND cannot be used as you cannot be in two different places at the same time (unless you have superpowers, but that's outside of the scope of this User Guide)
- For many countries The Region drop-down is filled automatically with states or provinces when the Country has been selected. The page may be quickly refreshed to load the new information.
In the example below, a business that is using MailUp in connection with an ecommerce store is setting up a filter that looks for customers whose latest order amount was a number between 100 and 500. Two conditions were created using the "Decimal" type and connected using the AND operator. This filter is based on the assumption that the a field containing the latest order amount exists in the Recipients Fields.

The system makes an educated guess about the location of a recipient at the time an email message is opened based on the IP address of that recipient at that specific point in time. Because of the way IP addresses work, a correlation can be established between a certain IP address and a geographical location. |
Using Conditions to Define a Larger Region
You can use the OR operator to define a larger geographical region where a recipient may or may not be. For example, let's assume that you wish to target customers that typically live on the West Coast of the United States. To do so, you will need to create a new Geolocation Filter that has three conditions:
- The recipient is in the United States, in the state California
- OR, in the United States, in the state of Oregon
- OR, in the United States, in the state of Washington
Here is a screen shot that provides a visual example of how this would be setup.
Degree of Precision
You can choose three degrees of precision on how a geolocation filter is applied: high, medium or low.
- High: excludes IP addresses that are at the periphery of the selected area (i.e. IP addresses that could be considered inside or outside of the selected area). You will get less results, but more precise ones.
- Medium: includes IP addresses that are located between the periphery and the middle of the selected area (there could be some location errors).
- Low: includes IP addresses that are at the periphery of the selected area (i.e. IP addresses that could be considered inside or outside of the selected area). You will get more results, but less precise ones
